RECYCLYING AND REUSING IN DESIGN

01 May 2018 / christine davis jannino

When we first started our company back in 2004, back in a little coastal town on the South Shore of Massachusetts (yoo-hoooo Hull, Massachusetts aka Nantasket Beach), we immediately dove into the furniture painting aspect as a way to supplement the downtime between traditional painting jobs. We scoured the thrift shops, Craigslist, and the sides of the road for old, abandoned furniture to turn into pieces we could save and transform. Pieces we could redesign, paint, and turn around quickly for a profit. Many times. the profits were small, but just enough to pay a bill or two. But the whole concept of taking something that nobody wanted and turning it into something someone "just had to have", was the joyful part of this. The whole "ugly duckling into a swan" thing that really fed my creative side. If I had my way I would've kept all those pieces, that was the downside: seeing them go out the door.

Shortly thereafter, we began painting clients' furniture pieces, kitchen cabinets, vanities, etc. as part of our services plan. Many clients looking at our portfolio started to ask if I could actually shop for pieces that I thought would work well in their homes and thus the addition of our design services to our services plan/menu.

We began to be hired, not only to paint clients' interiors and exteriors but to decorate and outfit small mudrooms to entire rental cottages on the beach towns of the South Shore and Cape Cod. The biggest compliment was not in the purchases we made from the fine furniture or boutiques, but, rather, the painted pieces we had recycled. The clients marveling over the before and after photographs of the pieces was the highlight of my days back then. Recycling and reusing in design is the cherry on top!

Now after living in Southwest Florida for over ten years now, we see more and more people here embracing that recycle/reuse lifestyle and that makes us SMILE!

It is imperative that more people not rush out and buy everything "new". Many times, those new pieces are, to put it bluntly, junk. The older pieces are often much better constructed and have history. WHAT is more important than history?!

So, when you move into that new home, don't immediately feel the need to rip out those old wooden cabinets, call us to paint them! Just inherit your Aunt Hazel's old dining room set full of scratches, a bureau, a curio cabinet, a huge oak desk, a sideboard, a vanity, a set of mismatched wooden chairs, or a piano bench, call us to paint them! It's about history, design, and a few smiles along the way.
